Derby Nation

I bought the Wicked Package a couple months ago and while I've been really lucky to not have blisters, my skates still don't fit right. If I get them tight enough at the ankles so that I'm not sliding, my feet end up numb and I can barely skate. I keep the laces from toe to ankle extremely loose because otherwise my feet cramp really bad. I saw a youtube video by a Reidell seller that showed how to open the heel counter to help with fitting problems and decided to try it. It worked okay on the right boot and seems to have helped some, but I apparently did too much on the left boot and now it's way too wide back there and my heel slips all over the place, even when I have the boots tied so tight I can't feel my toes. I tried the beer coozie solution from the Fishnet Burns blog, but there was so much room that the coozie just slipped out of my boot after an hour of practice and didn't help a bit while it was in. I have no control at all while skating now. Is it possible to close the heel counter back up some, or have I ruined my boot? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for my fitting problems? Our league is pretty new and none of our other skaters have experience with this and we don't have any local skate shops I can talk to.

I'm fairly new myself to the whole world of roller skates, so I don't want to try to give advice, I just know what I've researched so far...but I do know some gals who know their stuff that you could contact and maybe they could give you some advice...

They are really good with getting back to you. :)

I had a set of skates that stretched out too much around the left ankle. It sucked. I bought myself a set of these and it took care of the problem. Several girls on my league skate with these and love them. http://www.powerslideusaracing.com/p-90-ankle-stabilizer.aspx

I've since gotten a new pair of skates, but I still use these during bouts. It's just that little extra bit of stability that you want when you're skating on a slick surface (like we do), and it also stops you from having to re-tie your skates during a game.

one of our girls puts 2 sets of laces on each skate. This way the bottom set can adjust the toes correctly and the top can adjust the ankles.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Niki, I'll see if I can send them an email about it.

Coco, I looked at them and the look pretty neat, but how do they keep your foot from sliding? There isn't much of a description on the website and it doesn't really say how they work.

Lizbeth, one of the girls on my team suggested that also for the fit problems I've been having all along and sadly, it did not help either. Right now, I have the laces laced so that they kind of skip the widest part of my foot. Check out the pic.

Thanks again for the suggestions, and if anyone else has any, please add them!

They're essentially like the velcro speed strap that come on the skates, but detachable. Also, they ratchet down (think of rollerblades) so they don't have any give like the velcro strap. By going across the top of your ankle, they prevent your heel from slipping around.
I've never attempted to use them on skates that had the velcro strap, only 395s & 965s, so I don't know how they would work with yours exactly, but it's worth a shot.

Have you taken them to a cobbler? A professional cobbler may not be a skate expert, but they are show experts and may be able to help you out! I just got some new skates that are way too tight and I have having the local cobbler work on them a bit for me.

Thanks for this suggestion. I have seriously thought about doing this, but haven't for financial reasons and because I wasn't really sure if they could do anything. Will you let me know how yours turn out?

I took them yesterday and the cobbler told me that because they are too tight at my toes, he cannot do anything. :-( I am a sad Panda. However, for your problem it is still possible that one could help you out. It shouldn't be too expensive. You might just try calling one and explaining the problem to see if they could help and how much they would charge.

I may be hitting the ebay for another pair of skates.
