Derby Nation

Beyonslay said in a blog post that it took her a full year to get ready to skate in a bout. She's totally my hero (another big girl like me). I've been going since May, and it's now January. I've seen some girls who started at the same time or later than me who are further ahead. Everyone is different right? But sometimes I get a little anxious that I just eternally suck and will never get put on a team. Thoughts??

Hang in there, girl. Everyone gets better in their own time. If you keep practicing, you HAVE to get better and better and better! Do land drills when not in skates, and skate whenever you can. That's what i'm doing to eventually make it onto a team. I know i will when i'm ready, and you will, too!

I know it feels like I will never be ready to participate in a bout but the girls I skate with are very encouraging and I know if I give it my 110% it will fall into place (so to speak) I can feel myself getting stronger and stronger too, practices are hard as hell but not as hard as they were when I first joined! Can actually do the pyramid without feeling like I might actually vomit! lol

OH GAWD!! Skate 1 lap as fast as possible, tag off. your partner skates one lap same, tags off. Skate two laps, three, four, and repeat until you hit 7 laps at full speed. then you go from 7 laps to 6 laps to 5 laps *you get the picture* When you are done you are almost dead lol ahahahah I love derby even when it makes me want to keel over lol

We have some great drill leaders here in Tri-City

Don't stress. You'll get there. I took me alittle over 6 months just to jam with my own team at practice and I still have alot to learn before I bout.

You have to keep in mind that when we all first start out, some of us havent even been on skates in ten years or more. I'm a bigger girl, and so It is taking me a bit longer to strengthen my leg muscles and get my core balance back in check. Some of the veterans on my team say it took them 6 months to a year to even be ready to bout. I would rather take a long time to get it right, then get out on the rink too early and really hurt myself or someone else. Ya gotta just be determined, and if you feel that motivation slipping, then make sure you go to a bout and watch.....For me, just watching a bout motivates the hell out of me!! LoL

It's taken me about 6 months to build up my stamina and I'm still not fast enough (bigger girl here too). But I'm on a new league so we're all learning together. I agree with you....I'd rather take longer and get it right than to get out there and get injured. Going to bouts is one of the best motivations I've found! :-)

That's so true! Or even just youtube.

Yeah, my thing is that even though I'm getting better, the girls on the team are getting EVEN better. Our league's still pretty new, so by the time I'm stable and bout-ready by today's standards, they're going to be super-awesome and still able to kick my ass. I guess I'll have to be content to knock over even-newer fresh meat. :)

And, plus, grrrrrrrr I've been down for the count for two weeks now with this stupid effing illness. I feel like it's interrupting my momentum. Working out is next to impossible when you have a chest infection. Just going for a walk makes me gag. I can feel my muscle tone slipping away.

I have been with out local team for hmmm well...6 months maybe and still haven't got to play in my first bout. It is a little discouraging but you just gotta stick with it. We had a girl who was so anxious to play and broke her leg after only 3 months, so it is important to be truly ready! Good luck to you, hopefully soon we will both be ready.

I feel the same way!

I keep having to tell myself that we all go at different paces, and that I'm going faster than a lot of people, but every time a new girl starts that's at the same level as I am, I get kind of disheartened.

Just try to push yourself at practice, and talk to your recruit coach. Do you have a derby big sister? It's something our league does, and it's nice to have someone to talk to about your progress and your worries.
