Derby Nation

I'm new to the derby coaching realm. I was a ref down in North Carolina for a while, but have relocated to Chicago and am now starting as a bench coach with the Windy City Rollers. I have a million questions, but the most burning is: Is there a pillars to good derby coaching? I've coached hockey before successfully and was in the Army for 12 years. I'm familiar with coaching, teaching and mentoring, providing purpose, direction and motivation, but whats the best way to apply that to derby and are there some good basics to take along to my first practice in August? Any help will be most welcomed!

Well man I can tell you after being in derby as long as I have learned a couple of things... Derby has its own time no matter what your schedule runs on and people will take what you have to offer if you have earned their trust. The skaters that want the knowledge will pick up what you are laying down and the skaters who want it their way will either take it or leave it dont take it personal.

First things first you have to build report with the skaters and show them that you are there to help. After that you have to learn how each skater thinks and find ways to get through to each of them.
