I joined the Houston Roller Derby Recreation League, also called The Machete Betties, on Aug. 18, 2009 after being a fan of flat-track roller derby since 2005. I ended my new-skater probation period and was officially inducted into the Betties team on Oct. 20, 2009. I am now addicted and can't wait to try out for an HRD team!
I currently roll on some used Riedell R3s with Cosmic wheels that I got for a great price, but I am planning to upgrade once I make try-outs. I might go to the January 2010 try-outs, depending on how I'm skating at that point.
As of late-October, I am working on some more complicated skating skills, STILL working on my cross-overs and LOVING scrimmages.
Outside of derby, I work as a reporter covering the refined fuels industry for a national business newswire. My skater name is a nod to my newspaper reporting background. I love live music and go to as many shows as is humanly and financially possible, and I played guitar in a band for two years while I lived in Austin. I still play guitar, bass and a little drums. I'm also an avid theatre-goer, and I love attending shows at The Alley Theatre in Houston to support my husband, who is sound engineer there. I am a coffee and beer snob and spend the rest of my free time at coffeeshops and pubs, depending on what time of day it is.
