I'm new here and stoked to be here. I am new to derby and loving it. I have a problum though. My skates are not fitting right, they are too big and i tried on a teamates skates the other night who has the same size foor as me and her's were a dream. It felt like an extention of my foot. Which i have now realized is why i have such a hard time controlling my feet under me and it's hard to get the speed and control i need, and have been looking for.
Soooo...with that said i am looking for a pair…

Its an end of an era. Coal City has been a lot of things to many different people. To the girls who were Coal City it was a family and outlet. Like most families it had it's dysfunction and congruency, it's ups and downs, and it taught us how and how not to do things. Most of all Coal City brought the spirit of roller derby to us. It was our family!
Many of us are moving on and carrying that spirit with us. We are also taking the friends we made and skills we have learned to better ourselves in…

Wow, I used to love watching roller derby. It was on right after wrestling on Saturday mornings when I was a kid. That was a long time ago. Now my kids want to do this and I guess there is a place downtown that may be opening soon. We'll have to get some good equipment and
Medical insurance before they get out on the rink though. Do any of you more experienced skaters know where to pick up some reasonable…

Derby News Network is producing “DERBY 101”, a web series on the
sport of modern roller derby. We’re hoping to have the first installment out by the end of September.
For the show open, we need your help! There are two things we’d like, to give proper repping to the derby community:
We need your league logos, preferably in a size that will stand up to Hi Def eventually (1920x1080 pixels). You know the end of “
Hell on Wheels”? Where they have the league logos being slapped on the…

Since the Demons have become affiliated with OSDA, we've heard our share of myths through the grapevine! Some people haven't the slightest idea of what OSDA is, and so the rumors fly! Here are a few of the most popular and some of the most outrageous rumors we've heard about OSDA, and what OSDA is really all about. What have you heard lately?
1. OSDA is Co-Ed Only
Not so! OSDA allows for 4 different types of games: all women, all men, co-ed, and old school style (alternating periods of all men…

Long time derby fans and veteran derby girls alike have developed a language all of their own. As a new derby girl, it seemed I heard new terms almost every time I was at practice, talked to my team mates or went out on the internet looking for information.
So, I think it is high time someone begin to put together a roller derby dictionary.
Off the top of my head, the following are some of the words, terms or phrases I think should be in it. I ask for you to either give me new definitions, bette…

It has come to my attention that my pads stink to high heaven. I became aware of this last night on my way home from scrimmage when a putrid scent in my car almost forced me to swerve off the road. Imagine my shock and horror (ok, not really) to find out that the rancid smell was coming from my epidermis! Curse my pads. Curse their unyielding scent that sneaks up and accosts my sensitive olfactory glands.
I must find a way to vanquish them!
To date, I have tried baking soda, Dr. Bronners, Soak…

So, I managed to escape the Arkansas borders this summer and skate with the Sintral Florida Derby Demons throughout the month of July. Those ladies are fantastic. I was scared to DEATH about going in to skate with a new bunch of rollergirls (after all, my team's used to my obnoxiousness, but who knows how complete strangers would react?), but they went out of their way to be welcoming and understanding. Even scrimmaged with them during practices, during which several skaters (especially super-bl…

When you are trying to learn a new skill, it is very easy to get discouraged when you don’t just pick everything up as quickly as you would like.
At least I do.
All my life, I have been relatively good at nearly everything I put my mind to doing. It has always been easy for me to pick up new skills and add them to my bag of tricks. But then all those skills were either craft-related or academic.
So roller derby is a whole new challenge for me. It is a skill in an area I never challenged mysel…

So it’s been nearly three weeks since I have been on skates, due to lack of pads, canceled practices or me just plain not feeling up to going.
The problem is the longer I am off skates, the easier it is to just not go to practice.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to quit. Well most of me doesn’t anyway. And my husband isn’t likely to let me quit, in fact when I chose to miss last night’s practice due to sheer and utter exhaustion he said “well fine, but you aren’t missing Wednesday for any rea…

Dreams are often swept aside for real life. Especially the hopes, dreams and ambitions of the young. As we “grow up” we are somehow convinced that the hopes and dreams we once harbored, no matter their hold on our hearts, are best forgotten.
I have always had a flare for the dramatic, which is probably why I found myself drawn to the theatre and music. I sang, no performed, for anyone who would listen and watch as I was a kid. People always told me about my “beautiful voice.” For this reason, I…

SKATE-OR-BUST: ROSI VS. BREAST CANCER
July 6, 2009 Evansville, Ind.--- Nearing the end of their season, the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana (ROSI) are taking on their toughest opponent yet, breast cancer. This Saturday, July 11th ROSI will present Skate-or-Bust, a special roller derby event. My original goal date to be bouting will come and go this weekend without my being on skates.
Skate-or-Bust, ROSI’s big weekend breast cancer benefit affair is only 4 days away. I am excited but in a bittersweet way.
When I first started skating I made a goal to be ready to skate by the July 11 bout. So now that date is going to come and go without my being ready.
I am okay with not meeting this goal. I have come a long way and that is the thing to remember. My skills are just about where they…

One of the wonderful thing about derby is all of the great things teams across the country do for charity organizations. I get out on the internet and read about other derby teams and every single last one of them do all they can for charity.
Derby isn’t a cheap sport. There is equipment to buy, like skates that cost anywhere from $100 to $700, pads that cost up to $100 for a full set and then there is the travel expenses for away bouts. But derby girls do it on their own dollars. They don’t ge…

Women are an amazing thing. Sure we can be bitchy, moody, catty and everything in between; but when push comes to shove, we get things done.
Getting things done is exactly what the women around me have done lately. They saw a job that needed to be done (i.e. finding a way to help me) and they did it. Through words of encouragement, an understanding ear or two and a nudge in the right direction and I am back on course towards becoming a kick ass derby girl.
Several of my teammates have been won…

So I totally meant to do a write-up of our last bout against Tornado Alley, but never had the time to get around to it. I'll explain why in a moment. Long story short-- we lost, but just barely. It was literally a back-and-forth game resulting in a tie game that went into overtime. So, two firsts for us-- our first score of over 100 points in a bout, and our first overtime game. Very exciting. So, congrats again to Tornado Alley on a very hard-earned win, their first of the season! And a huge de…
