Summer Derby Lovin'

So, I managed to escape the Arkansas borders this summer and skate with the Sintral Florida Derby Demons throughout the month of July. Those ladies are fantastic. I was scared to DEATH about going in to skate with a new bunch of rollergirls (after all, my team's used to my obnoxiousness, but who knows how complete strangers would react?), but they went out of their way to be welcoming and understanding. Even scrimmaged with them during practices, during which several skaters (especially super-bl… Continue

Moving right along...

So I totally meant to do a write-up of our last bout against Tornado Alley, but never had the time to get around to it. I'll explain why in a moment. Long story short-- we lost, but just barely. It was literally a back-and-forth game resulting in a tie game that went into overtime. So, two firsts for us-- our first score of over 100 points in a bout, and our first overtime game. Very exciting. So, congrats again to Tornado Alley on a very hard-earned win, their first of the season! And a huge de… Continue

The Knoxville Article Controversy

I know, I know, it's been a while since I last posted. I'm a bad lil' girl. Anyway, here's a quick one with the promise of a longer post later. Seriously. I promise. Anyway, many of you are aware of the uproar over the article written about the Hard Knox Roller Girls in the Knoxville paper, The Metro Pulse. For those who have not had the chance to read it, read it now. Be sure to read the comments, as they… Continue

Look out! Here I come!

I got to scrimmage last night! It was awesome! Ok, so the first time, everyone came flying pat me, leaving me squarely out of play for the full 2 minutes. So, Rick wisely advised me to "skate like somebody's gonna kick your ass." And although I wasn't up to par yet, the second go-around, I kept up with the pack and managed a few whips as well. I feel so accomplished. :) Still working on speed, and coach is really pushing me on that hard-core. Continue

Motivation!

Don't know what it is, but I'm ultra-motivated recently. Driven. Focused. You'd never know it to look at my calendar for the month (geez, am I ever going to be stressed), but I'm moving myself forward. Sunday's practice went really well, considering I was on severe cold medication and could barely breathe. I had to stop a few ties because of coughing fits, but I made it. Coach even commented that my overall stance is getting much better on the sprints. I still think I need to work on quick-quic… Continue

Looks like it's self-criticism season...

Jumping on the self-criticism bandwagon here. On the plus side, I made it through our entire warm-up session AND 15-minute sprint without stopping (a first!). I was red-faced and sweating like a hog, but I made it. Score one for me. I've found that talking to myself occasionally ("You can do this!" and "DIG DEEP!" are the common themes) tends to keep me going when I think my legs are gonna give out. I'm sure I look crazy, but what else is new? However, I'm still sucking on the crossover drills.… Continue

Ch-ch-ch-changes!

Got my new derby name approved by the most awesome powers-that-be at twoevils.org. Harlot Starlet is now Killer Lite! Yeah, the old name was ok and all, but it was kinda hard to roll off the tongue*. Killer Lite just seems to be a better fit. I'm happy with it. :) Been pushing myself HARD to make up for lost rink time and to break past the plateau, and it finally seems to be paying off! Over the past few practices, they've been running myself and the rest of the "skater tots" (our own term for… Continue

Derby and the Economy: Your Experiences?

Got the news last night that everyone dreads: hubby got laid off due to his company being in financial distress. I'm praying, PRAYING, that this won't hurt my derby attendance, since I have to drive 50 miles one direction just to get to practice. As it is, I'm in fairly bad need of a new plate and toe stops, but it looks like those'll have to wait a while. ::sigh:: Anybody else seeing an effect of the economy on derby, either personally or on your league in general? ETA: Ok, I know how moronic… Continue

Derby and Anger: A Great Response

On the Yahoo! roller_girls group, we're currently discussing how to deal with anger issues in practice, scrimmages, and even bouts. SLyDeR of the West Texas Roller Dollz summed it up beautifully, and I thought I'd share her response here. Read on: "It sounds like your focusing alot on others and what they are or arent doing, and your letting it effect you and your ability to enjoy derby. Derby is a tough sport for some people because your team is only as good as its worst player, and if you str… Continue

MRD: PKP vs AOD and The Hat Trick to End All Hat Tricks

So, where were you Saturday at 8:46 pm? Tell you exactly where I was-- watching Memphis Roller Derby's own Lil' Cinner score an amazing THREE GRAND SLAMS IN ONE JAM while the AOD blockers completely shut out the PKP's jammer. I was absolutely speechless. And to top it all off, in her next jam, she was established as lead jammer in under HALF a lap. Seriously, watch out for that one! Anyhoo, all gushing aside, I got to attend MRD's opening bout this weekend as the PrisKilla Prezleys took on the… Continue

Derby With a Vengeance: CARD vs. ACRG

Last night, despite the rest of the world off in football-land, we had RECORD attendance for our bout against Assassination City Roller Girls' Deadly Kennedys. We're absolutely giddy about that, and credit a lot of our new crowd with the influx of skaters who joined us from Little Rock Derby Girls. Man, are we ever glad you gals are here! And you brought some real powerhouses with ya! Once again, the beginning of the bout was delayed. After a rousing national anthem provided by our own lovely r… Continue

CARD vs. GCRG: Derby Strikes Back!

First of all, let me say that my inner geek-girl was loving the fact that we had a Star Wars-themed bout. With freaking STORMTROOPERS! At one point, I was working the scoreboard and intensely focused on the carnage in front of me, when I felt a nudge on the back of my head. I turned around, and saw a Stormtrooper aiming a gun at my face. I laughed so hard, I nearly fell off my chair. So, major props to the 501st Stormtrooper Legion AND to Sar-Rated's fantastic hubby Chad for making giant murals… Continue

::headdesk without a helmet::

Getting frustrated with my slow progress lately. Managed to get my speed up, but am still skating too cautiously. Even telling myself to get the hell over it and just SKATE isn't working. Anyway, skated until I literally collapsed because my legs just gave out completely. Dude, where's my stamina lately? Under coach's suggestion, I'm walking around with 5-pound weights on my ankles the days I don't have practice. I'm hoping that if I build up my calf and ankle muscles, I'll be a little steadier… Continue

Slow and Steady Progress

Ever since I got my new skates (Riedell 250s with Answer D-Rod wheels, thank you very much), my technique has changed considerably. Speed is picking up and crossovers are coming easier, even when skating clockwise (a.k.a. the direction of EVIL). Still, getting frustrated at my progress. It's slow and steady, and I realize how far I've actually come, all things considered. Still, I'm at that frustrated point. Rick (our coach) keeps telling me to relax, because I'm tensing my muscles enough to ma… Continue

Double Deader: CARD vs. DDG

Took my first road trip with the league last weekend. Sure, I wasn't skating, but I went for the experience. Since my Catwoman costume went over really well at our bout against East Texas, I decided that dressing in costume is something I should totally do until I'm out there bouting for myself. And so, I dressed up at the Rock-N-Renegades logo girl. White button-down shirt, short black skirt, fishnets, black boots, and a fedora. No suspenders, but I figure I can always grab some of those later… Continue

And so...here I am

Joined up with Central Arkansas Roller Derby in mid-August. Actually, they friended me on MySpace about a year ago, and I'd been talking about derby ever since. Finally, my hubby told me to shut up and just join already. Had to re-learn how to skate, I've finally mastered crossovers, and bought my first pair of derby skates. Last night, one of the other fresh meat gals and I ran blocking drills. Apparently, I have very bony shoulders when delivering a block. And I'm still working on an effectiv… Continue
