Derby Nation

Long time derby fans and veteran derby girls alike have developed a language all of their own. As a new derby girl, it seemed I heard new terms almost every time I was at practice, talked to my team mates or went out on the internet looking for information.
So, I think it is high time someone begin to put together a roller derby dictionary.
Off the top of my head, the following are some of the words, terms or phrases I think should be in it. I ask for you to either give me new definitions, better definitions or more words! And please, link all your fans and teammates to this blog so they can all weigh in. I want to put this together for a book I am working on.

Derby Wife A derby wife is that platonic love whom you can share your love of roller derby with. You can talk roller derby until the end of time and she will never get tired of hearing about it. She will cheer you on when you are having trouble getting that extra oomph in practice. She will kick your ass in scrimmages and then hug you after. She will dance with you at after parties and cheer for you at bouts. A derby wife is your roller derby bff.

bout A roller derby tournament or game is referred to as a bout. A bout is usually broken up into two 30 minute halves and those halves are broken up into 2 minutes races called jams.

pusher wheel Pusher wheels are just very soft with a durometer rating similar to outdoor wheels. They are usually put on the inside of the right skate and the outside of the left and are grippier than the standard 95a hardness wheel. They help grip the surface of the track in tight turns.

jammer There is one jammer per jam for each team. The jammer is the only one who can score points by passing members of the opposite team. Jammers have a star on the side of their helmet.

lead jammer The first jammer to make it through the pack without any penalties in a jam is the lead jammer. The lead jammer can end the jam, referred to as 'calling off the jam', any time she wishes.

blocker There are four blockers on the track for each team. Their job it to keep the other team's jammer from scoring points and to help their own jammer get past the other team's blockers.

pivot The pivot is the blocker for each team that sets the general pace of the pack. Pivots have a stripe down the middle of their helmet.

grand slam When the jammer passes all four blockers of the opposite team and then laps the other jammer she scores an extra point for that jammer. That is a five point pass called a grand slam.

helmet panties Helmet panties are covers that go over the helmet to signify the jammer (star) and the pivot (stripe).

giner shiner This is like a black eye on the female private parts, in derby it is often caused by a skate to the pelvic region.

rink rash The nasty red burn a skater gets on her skin after falling on a skating surface while playing roller derby. These are often worn as trophies and can be seen through holes in tights or leggings.

I did a blog back in 2007 with a lot of derby terms of the time (flat and banked), many of which are still in common usage:

There used to be an interactive Wiki site at derbydictionary.com, but alas, it’s long gone. It was started by Wet-Spot from MNRG, and she may still have the resulting definitions, which were pretty extensive.
