Derby Nation

Women are an amazing thing. Sure we can be bitchy, moody, catty and everything in between; but when push comes to shove, we get things done.

Getting things done is exactly what the women around me have done lately. They saw a job that needed to be done (i.e. finding a way to help me) and they did it. Through words of encouragement, an understanding ear or two and a nudge in the right direction and I am back on course towards becoming a kick ass derby girl.

Several of my teammates have been wonderful in my little “I can’t do it” crisis, to name a few…The Virgin Cherry, Painbow Brite, Velveteen Rabid, Andrea (no derby name yet), Rachel (also no name yet) and my husband.

Perhaps my husband took the worse of my bad attitude. He had to witness and put up with my mini temper tantrum in the parking lot of the skating rink where we practice, where I had my final rock bottom break-down. He was great too! He was not going to let me quick no matter what I said.

Neither were me teammates. They have all seen how much work I have put into the last two months and none of them were going to just let me disappear by the wayside without a fight.

It is because of all of them, those mentioned and many not mentioned, that I am still at it. Derby is in my blood now, but I honestly was starting to try to think of other ways to stay involved and just not skate.

I have been off my skates for a week. I needed that time to recollect my thoughts and my determination, and I have done so. Tomorrow I will return to practice with renewed determination to be the best derby girl I can be.

So I have hit a brick wall called endurance…now it is time to up the work and find a way over or through that wall.

I started today.
