Derby Nation

So I totally meant to do a write-up of our last bout against Tornado Alley, but never had the time to get around to it. I'll explain why in a moment. Long story short-- we lost, but just barely. It was literally a back-and-forth game resulting in a tie game that went into overtime. So, two firsts for us-- our first score of over 100 points in a bout, and our first overtime game. Very exciting. So, congrats again to Tornado Alley on a very hard-earned win, their first of the season! And a huge derby hug to the TARG player who wrote our captain to tell her that the game made her "fall in love with derby again." :) And, as usual, major derby love to the MRD skaters and refs who came to help out and cheer. We love you guys to pieces.

Another observation that Feignix (one of our refs) pointed out to me. Sitting at the tables at afterparty, we had athletes and fans from three different states-- Arkansas, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. In any other sport, that would've been the setup for disaster. But derby? We were toasting each other, cheering, and sharing potato skins with each other. It was a beautiful moment.

Anyway, back to why I've been busy. Had to get packing and make the move to Florida for a while. In the meantime, other than the couple of Mondays I've missed due to illness (leave it to wussy old me to get colds in the summer), I've been practicing with the ladies of Sintral Florida Derby Demons. And I've been loving it. I'm loving learning new drills, learning to do pilates with skates on, and working on my footwork. And switching from the wooden floors in Little Rock to the cement floors in DeLand has been a pleasant challenge. I've met some amazing skaters and been observing until my eyes bleed.

And as far as skills go-- I'm still making baby steps. In LR, coach has been letting me scrimmage lately, so I've scrimmaged with SFDD, and being able to keep up with the pace of the pack is getting a little easier. Next step is to train myself to keep looking around and getting stronger hits before a jammer blows past me. I'm managing to hold my own when taking a check from an opposing player, but then they may be holding back a bit, because nobody wants to be responsible for beating up the new girl (which I appreciate!). LOL

Hoping to get a couple more practices in with SFDD before I make the trek back home. And I'm really looking forward to seeing them bout on the 20th. I've volunteered to help out if they need me. Note to self-- buy merch before I go home! :)

Killer out!
