SKATE-OR-BUST: ROSI VS. BREAST CANCER

July 6, 2009 Evansville, Ind.--- Nearing the end of their season, the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana (ROSI) are taking on their toughest opponent yet, breast cancer. This Saturday, July 11th ROSI will present Skate-or-Bust, a special roller derby event. This event includes a bout, a raffle, and a silent auction all benefitting the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive walk supporting the American Cancer Society’s unique mission to help people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early, to help people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis, to find cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery, and to fight back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.

“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is one of the many great ways the community can help advocate for cancer care for everyone,” said Mindi Matthews, Associate Director, American Cancer Society, Southwest Area Service Center.

For the bout, ROSI has divided up and borrowed a few skaters from out of town to debut two teams: the Milk Maids vs. the Bad Mammogrammers. Because the bout is being sponsored by Ellis Park, all proceeds from admission will go to Making Strides. At the bout, ROSI is holding a raffle for prizes donated from area businesses in order to raise additional funds for the awareness and prevention of breast cancer.

They are also holding a silent auction for painted busts that were casted from ROSI skaters. The auction will begin at the bout and continue the following day, Sunday, July 12th at Penny Lane Coffee House, 600 SE Second Street in downtown Evansville, from 5 to 7 p.m. Money raised from the auction will be donated to Making Strides, as well.

The bout will take place at Swonder Ice Arena, 209 N. Boeke Road, or as ROSI has lovingly dubbed it, “Swonder Roller Derby Arena.” Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door and $5 with military identification. Children age ten and under are admitted for free.

The Rollergirls of Southern Indiana is an all-female amateur roller derby team based out of Evansville, IN. ROSI was formed in August of 2007, and is the only non-profit roller derby league in Evansville. The league is skater-managed and operated. ROSI strives to better the community and has donated time, money, merchandise and support to many non-profit organizations including the Vanderburgh Humane Society, WNIN, and Youth First. ROSI has also collected donations for the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24 (NMCB 24) currently stationed overseas.

ROSI plays Saturday at Swonder Ice Arena. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the bout starts at 7 p.m. To purchase tickets and for more information, visit www.RollergirlsofSIN.com. Advance tickets are available at Abyss Co., located at 4851 Monroe Ave., Just Rennies Catering, located at 100 SE Fourth Street in downtown Evansville, or Swonder Ice Arena.
