One of the wonderful thing about derby is all of the great things teams across the country do for charity organizations. I get out on the internet and read about other derby teams and every single last one of them do all they can for charity.
Derby isn’t a cheap sport. There is equipment to buy, like skates that cost anywhere from $100 to $700, pads that cost up to $100 for a full set and then there is the travel expenses for away bouts. But derby girls do it on their own dollars. They don’t get paid for what they do. The team doesn’t provide their travel. And most teams charge the members monthly dues! The girls don’t personally see any of the money made at fundraisers or from the ticket sales and merchandise sales. That money goes to pay for the upkeep expenses for the team like venue, insurance, advertising, promotions, uniforms…
The rest of the money goes to charity.
Now, I understand that the average person either doesn’t know anything about roller derby or they picture the choreographed violent bouts of the 1970s. It comes with a stigma. People think only a certain type of person would be attracted to the sport either as a spectator or a participant. I have seen people turn their noses up at it. But, I never thought a charity organization would do that.
